Past
It is said that the Hart family was one of the first that magic was granted to by the goddess Morrigan. Whether true or not, there is no denying they possess great influence and power within the coven. The Hart name is enough to open many doors that others might find near impossible to. As such members of the Hart family must hold themselves to certain standards. This was especially true for Brendan and his two oldest sisters, whose mother was high priestess of the coven they had been born into. Their mother never accepted less than the best out of them. This was in term of their magic as well as their behavior. She made it clear to them as member of the Hart family that they were expected to put their duty to the coven before anything else. This included marrying whomever she dictated. In fact, she had each of her children betrothed before they took their first steps. She picked her children's future spouses based on what she thought was best for the coven. and as such she didn't think it was important for them to meet their intended before their weddings. She was certain her children would do their duty and marry whomever she told them regardless of personal feelings. She should have known better--especially where Brendan was concerned.
He was always the rebellious child. He was always pushing the limits, always questioning, but he was the most talented out of his mother's three children. When he learned of his betrothal his first response was to protest, but he decided perhaps he should meet his intended first before he did. He tried to persuade his mother to arrange a meeting, but she refused because she didn't see the point of him meeting his bride-to-be before their wedding days. Such arrangements were made for those uncertain about their pending nuptials, and such didn't exist where her children were concerned. However, she did provide him with much needed information that helped him locate her himself. It was through her that he learned that his intended was the daughter of the high priestess of another coven. More than that she revealed which coven it was, and without hesitation he paid a visit to this coven. He found his bride-to-be less than ideal to put it mildly. She was beautiful--gorgeous even--but when it came to personality, she left something to be desired. She was shallow and self-centered. Nothing at all what he imagined what his wife to be. He decided right then and there he wasn't going to marry her. Some might call him a foolish romantic, but he was only going to marry someone that captured his heart and soul.
He didn't have to wait long before he found just person. She was the sister of his intended, but they were nothing alike. Her beauty didn't just come from any physical attributes, but also from an inner light. It was clear that she was not well liked within her coven, and it didn't take him long to discover the reason. She and her twin brother was the result of the unwelcomed union between their mother and father. While he didn't agree with their hatred towards her based on the crimes of her father, he did understand it, but he didn't understand them making her into a conduit. Such a thing was supposed to be reserved for those who were believed incapable of handling their powers, and she displayed no sign that she would be overwhelmed by them. He knew people were made conduits for various reasons beyond its intended purpose, and there was no doubt within his mind that she was condemned to such a fate because of the circumstance of her birth. It wasn't long after their meeting that he decided that she was going to be his wife and that he would free her from her chain. He knew both actions had the protentional of getting them both banished from the coven, but he didn't care.
While others were extremely upset by his actions the worse didn't come to pass. He didn't completely understand why it did, but he didn't dwell too much on the possibilities. It wasn't long after their marriage that the feelings of those around he began to change for the positive. There is no doubt within his mind that it was his influence that made this possible, but it became clear that it wasn't done as a way to garner favor from him. They generally held great affection for her. There were still those who harbored old resentment towards her. A few of which--such as her sister--who managed to collect some new ones. Brendan's dislike for his intended had not been mutual. She had been attracted to him the very moment they met, but she didn't learn he was her intended until later. She was overjoyed when she discovered the truth only to have someone else steal him away. She had never held any affection for her sister, but she had for the most part left her to her own device. This changed when she married Brendan. His wife's sister did everything within her power against her. She had taught that such a task would be easy considering everyone's general dislike of Brendan's wife. In fact, she was certain she would get her banished and Brendan would have no choice but to divorce her and marry whom he had originally been intended to.

She had taught that such a task would be easy considering everyone's general dislike of Brendan's wife. In fact, she was certain she would get her banished and Brendan would have no choice but to divorce her and marry whom he had originally been intended to.
When it became clear this plan wasn't going to work, she turned to another method. Brendan has no proof other than his suspicion that his once bride-to-be had been responsible for what happened to his wife. There was, however, no denying her glee over what came to pass. Brendan and his wife were expecting their first child. They were both overjoyed by this news. The pregnancy, however, proved to be extremely difficult for his wife. This wasn't unusually. Many women had difficult pregnancy. This wasn't evidence of foul play. He tried to protect his wife, but since he had no idea what was actually causing his wife's difficult pregnancy, he could only preform a general protection that anyone with a good understanding of magic could overcome. Finally, the day arrived for her to give birth and his worst nightmare came to pass. Both his wife and son wouldn't survive the birthing process. In fact, his son was born dead or so the midwife claimed.
Brendan's wife managed to cling to life for a while. Long enough that both Brendan and her twin brother could plead with the coven to help save her, but their efforts went upon deaf ears. No matter how hard they tried the coven wouldn't be persuaded. Both were outraged by this decision. Both were certain they knew the reason behind it. Those who governed the coven--especially her mother--still harbored a deep hatred for Brendan's wife despite the opinion of the general population. Her brother who had already been declared strigoi decided to commit himself to being exactly what the coven believed that role entailed. He became quite proficient at dark and forbidden magics. When it came to his own magic, Brendan's path wasn't much different than his brother-in-law. It might be argued that the only difference between the two was Brendan had not completely cut ties with the coven. He merely declared himself a warlock, but for the coven that was enough.
His family tried to convince him to reconsider, but he refused. While he was certain foul play had been involved with his wife's dismiss, he was certain that if his magic had not been restricted by the oath that all members of the coven had to take when they came of age that he might have been able to save wife and son, and perhaps uncovered who had been responsible for their death. He had been tempted to declare himself strigoi, but he decided to keep some connection to coven in order to uncover the truth behind what happened to his wife and son.
Present
There are those within the coven who believe that he is practically a strigoi and they should make it official. Most warlocks claim alliance to one particular coven even if they no longer bond by their oath, but this isn't the case with Brendan. He not only refuses to fall into the role that is expect of a warlock, but he also flaunts dark and forbidden magics. They proclaim that his family name protects him. If it wasn't for the fact that he was from one of the most prestigious families within the coven he would have been kicked to the curb a long time ago. There is no truth to this because the Hart family had disowned him. They even tried to convince Brendan to change his name as a way to further distance him from them. The real reason he hasn't been banished is the fact he has proven himself invaluable to the coven. He has used his dark and forbidden magic for the benefit of the coven many times, and since he claims no alliance to a particular coven any of them could attain his serve for a price. They might never admit this aloud, but they find such an arrangement extremely beneficial.
In spite his more nefarious reputation many wished to catch his affection and become his next wife. The only issue was he had no interest in getting married again. He took many lovers--if that was the right word for them--but it was clear he had no real affection for them. That was until he met her--a young woman by the name of Audrey. She reminded him of his wife in countless ways, but unlike his wife she was not hated by her coven. However, he knew this would change once the truth of her identity came out. Even if those around her didn't regard her poorly once her identity was revealed they would attempt to use this information for their benefit. He concluded that the only way to protect her from the upcoming storm was to bring her underneath his wings and the best way for him to do that was to marry her.
While there were many whom considered him quite the catch there were more who wished to have to have as little to do with him as possible--an opinion that Audrey's coven held. However, when demons invaded their walls, they had no choice but to seek out Brendan's help. They attempted to solve the problem themselves. They even contacted a few other independent warlocks, but none could rid them of their demon problem. It became clear that the only one that could help them was the one they were all but certain was responsible for putting the demons there in the first place. They almost declined his help when he named his price, but in the end, they relented because they knew more than their pride was at stake. They don't expect Audrey to be happy with the arrangement, but they do expect her to do her duty. In spite attaining her hand through such an unsavory method Brendan has no desire of winning her heart in such a manner. He intends to make her fall in love with him as honestly as possible.
